In Guanacaste many Dry Forest trees’ common names are used to give name to towns. An example of this situation is the Siete Cueros (Machaerium biovulatum) that used to be the name of Filadelfia, place where this National Refuge is located. It was used due to its abundance in the zone and also because the trees’ hard wood resembles the town’s culture.
