Defense against the Herbivores

It is believed that many years ago the Pochote (Bombacopsis quinata) used its spines as defense to avoid that the enormous prehistoric mammals devour him. However after the extinction of these animals this tree continued to preserve its spines, the reason is still unknown. Nowadays this species enjoys not having any threats besides human beings.
